#071: Make Up in Substance What You Save in Words đź‘‘

Jesus said 'follow me' and people dropped their livelihoods on the spot. What are you trying to make up in words that should be coming from substance?

Welcome, Family

Last week: they prayed through air raid sirens in Kyiv. We examined what faith looks like when it costs something.

This week: The Substance Issue. Because there is a version of Christian marketplace presence that is loud, branded, heavily hashtagged, and completely hollow. And there is a version that says almost nothing and changes everything.

The difference is not strategy. It is substance. And understanding where substance actually comes from is the issue nobody in the faith and business space wants to address directly.

⏳ THE SIGN

The Content Without Core Problem

The creator economy has produced a generation of believers with exceptional output and questionable depth.

Post every day. Build the personal brand. Use the right keywords. Lead with your faith. Tag it kingdom. Call it ministry. And somewhere in the machinery of content production, the actual life with God — the thing that was supposed to be the source of all of it — gets quietly deprioritized in favor of the output it was meant to produce.

The result is a marketplace full of Christian branding with diminishing Christian substance. “Kingdom entrepreneur” as an aesthetic. “Faith-based” as a niche. Sacred language covering a void that the language was never meant to fill.

Jim Rohn observed it about Jesus: the most compelling presentation in human history was two words. “Follow me.” People dropped everything immediately. Not because of the words. Because of everything He was that He didn’t have to say.

The Diagnosis: Most modern marketplace believers have inverted the equation. They are trying to make up in words what they lack in substance. And the audience — even the one that doesn’t know God — can feel the difference. You cannot manufacture the weight of genuine transformation. You can only grow it.

đź“– THE WORD

Matthew 5 & The Nature of Salt and Light

“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing.”
Matthew 5:13 (KJV)

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.”
Matthew 5:14-15 (KJV)

Jesus did not say you should try to be salt. He said you are salt. He did not say work toward becoming light. He said you are light. The identity precedes the activity. The substance precedes the strategy.

The Nature of Salt:

In the ancient world, salt was traded pound for pound for gold. Roman soldiers were paid in salt — which is where the word “salary” originates. “Worth their salt” was not a metaphor. It was an economic reality.

Salt does three things. It adds value. It preserves what is decaying. And it heals — but it burns when it heals. Applying salt to an infected wound is uncomfortable. It hurts to help. Which means saltiness was never designed to be pleasant to everyone it touches. It was designed to be effective.

The modern church traded saltiness for relevance. Decided that love was God’s only attribute and that the goal was to go along to get along. And in trying to offend no one, lost the capacity to preserve or heal anyone.

A Christian who cannot say the uncomfortable true thing when the uncomfortable true thing needs saying has lost their savor. And Jesus was unambiguous about what unsavory salt is good for. Nothing.

The Nature of Light:

Light does not come from the world. It comes to the world. Your presence in any environment — business meeting, marketplace, social media, neighborhood — is not meant to reflect the environment back at itself. It is meant to bring clarity to it.

And light cannot be hidden. Not because you announce it. Because it is what it is. When genuine transformation is present, it shows up whether you market it or not. When it is absent, no amount of marketing produces it.

The environment is changed not by what you say but by the light you are being. Which means the primary question for every believer in the marketplace is not “how do I talk about my faith at work?” It is “am I actually being transformed enough that the transformation is visible without explanation?”

🌍 THE WITNESS

Three Distinctions That Change Everything

DISTINCTION 1: SUBSTANCE VS. WORDS
Many people in the marketplace spend their entire lives trying to make up in words what they lack in substance. The pitch gets longer. The content gets more frequent. The branding gets more sophisticated. Because the thing that was supposed to make the words unnecessary — the actual weight of a life genuinely transformed by God — is not there yet.

Jesus said “follow me” in two words and it worked instantly because of all He was that He didn’t have to talk about. The goal of the believer in the marketplace is not better content. It is deeper substance. Content that flows from genuine transformation carries a weight that manufactured content cannot replicate regardless of production quality.

Stop trying to make up in words what should be coming from your life.

DISTINCTION 2: REPRESENTATION VS. COMPARTMENTALIZATION
A follower of Christ cannot divide life into sacred and secular. The plumber who follows Christ represents Christ through plumbing. The teacher represents Christ through teaching. The coach represents Christ through coaching. Not by tacking “in Jesus’ name” onto the back of an activity that has nothing to do with Jesus — but by being so genuinely transformed that the transformation shows up in how they do everything.

The chameleon approach — spiritual among believers, secular among clients — produces exactly the hollow kingdom branding the marketplace has grown suspicious of. You cannot hide who you are based on whose you are and expect the light to shine.

If Christ is genuinely inside you, He shows up in your work without a disclaimer. If He requires a disclaimer to be visible, He may not be as inside as the branding suggests.

DISTINCTION 3: SALT THAT BURNS VS. RELEVANCE THAT COMFORTS
The most uncomfortable truth in your notes: many believers have lost their saltiness because they are more concerned with being relevant than with being righteous.

Relevance seeks to make the truth comfortable enough that nobody is offended by it. Righteousness delivers the truth regardless of comfort because the healing matters more than the burning.

Salt does not apologize for burning. It just heals. The believer who has traded saltiness for cultural approval has not become more loving. They have become less effective. Because a preservation agent that stops preserving is not gentle salt. It is just flavorless residue.

Stand for the truth. Deliver it with the right disposition — calm, non-combative, secure. But do not sand the edges off the truth to make it more palatable. The burning is part of the healing.

🔥 THE WORK

The Substance Audit

  1. The Word Count Check: Where in your life or work are you currently compensating with more words, more content, more explanation — for a lack of genuine substance underneath? Name it. Then invest this week in the substance instead of the output.
  2. The Compartment Inventory: Where are you living like a chameleon — spiritual in one context, secular in another? Name the specific environment where you hide who you are based on whose you are. What would full representation look like there?
  3. The Savour Test: Have you lost your saltiness in any area? Where have you been going along to get along, choosing relevance over righteousness? What uncomfortable true thing have you been avoiding saying that actually needs to be said?
  4. The Two-Word Question: If Jesus could present with two words because of everything He was that He didn’t have to say — what would your two words be? And what would need to be true about your life for them to carry that weight?

🙏 PRAYER CORNER

Every Wednesday at 8:00 PM EST, we gather to build substance, together.

Let’s Pray:

“Father, we confess we have been making up in words what we lack in substance.

We branded the kingdom without building it in us. We used sacred language to cover a void that the language was never meant to fill. We chose relevance over righteousness and called it wisdom.

Forgive us. You said we are salt and light — not that we should try to be. The identity precedes the activity. The substance precedes the strategy.

Build the substance. Deepen the transformation. Make us people whose presence changes environments without explanation, whose two words carry weight because of everything we are that we don’t have to say.

We don’t want the brand. We want the life.

Amen.”

✝️ Final Word

Jesus said two words. People left everything.

Not because the words were clever. Not because the branding was strong. Because of everything He was that He didn’t have to talk about.

That weight is available to every believer. It is just built in the secret place, not the content calendar. In the Word, not the caption. In genuine transformation, not strategic positioning.

The marketplace can feel the difference. It always could.

Stop making up in words what should be coming from your life.
