#076: Stop Rehearsing a Future That Hasn't Happened 🎬
Anxiety is not just a feeling; it is an active discipline of rehearsing a future God never promised. Bring your mind back to the present grace provided for today.
[TL;DR]
- The Problem: We treat anxiety like a passive emotion that happens to us, when it is actually an active discipline of rehearsing a future God never promised.
- The Word: Matthew 6:34 (KJV) commands us to take no thought for tomorrow, revealing that projecting our minds into the future is a form of spiritual trespass.
- The Shift: Stop pulling up a chair for the enemy to narrate your future. Bring your mind back to the present grace provided for today’s specific trouble.
⏳ THE SIGN
Something happening to someone you love? Not having enough money to cover the rent next month? The terrifying possibility that you might not be enough for the calling on your life?
What are you so afraid of right now?
Fear has a specific way of getting loud. It shapes our choices, steals our peace, and keeps us locked in a mental theater, replaying worst-case scenarios over and over.
If you look closely at your anxiety, you’ll realize something uncomfortable: anxiety is not just a feeling. It is a rehearsal.
When you sit on your couch staring blankly at the wall, running through exactly what you’re going to say if you get fired, or how you’ll survive if that relationship completely falls apart, you are actively rehearsing a script for a play that hasn’t even been cast yet. You are spending real energy, real adrenaline, and real peace on a phantom reality.
The modern world tells us that this is just “being prepared” or “processing.”
The truth is much sharper: rehearsing a future that hasn’t happened is the exact definition of giving the enemy a seat at your table. You are pulling out a chair, pouring him a cup of coffee, and asking him to narrate the rest of your life.
đź“– THE WORD
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Matthew 6:34 (KJV)
Jesus did not deliver this as a casual suggestion or a cute bumper sticker. He delivered this as a divine command for how the human mind was engineered to operate.
The phrase “take no thought” in the original Greek is merimnao, which means to be pulled in different directions or distracted to the point of being divided into parts.
When you project your mind into tomorrow’s problems, you divide yourself. Your physical body is sitting in Friday, but your mental energy has time-traveled to next Tuesday.
God designed you to only have the grace, the strength, and the spiritual provision for exactly where your feet are planted. He provides manna for today. When you try to hoard tomorrow’s manna, or worry about tomorrow’s famine, you step outside the perimeter of His immediate grace.
Jesus is brutally honest: “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” He doesn’t promise that today will be easy. He guarantees that today has enough trouble of its own. But He also promises that you have the exact amount of grace required to conquer today’s trouble.
When you rehearse tomorrow’s disaster, you are fighting a battle you haven’t been equipped for yet.
🌍 THE WITNESS
Think about the children of Israel standing at the edge of the Red Sea. They had Pharaoh’s elite military charging at them from behind, and an uncrossable ocean in front of them. The panic immediately set in. They started rehearsing their own funeral.
They cried out to Moses, asking if there weren’t enough graves in Egypt that he had to drag them out into the wilderness to die. They had completely written the script for their own destruction. They were absolutely convinced they knew exactly how the story was going to end within the next hour.
But their rehearsal was completely wrong.
They didn’t factor in a wind that could split an ocean. They didn’t factor in the God who makes highways out of water. They spent all their emotional energy mourning a death they were never going to die.
How much of your current exhaustion is coming from fighting battles that God is never going to let you fight? The enemy loves it when you waste your present strength shadowboxing with a future that will never actually materialize.
🔥 THE WORK
It’s time to fire the director of the worst-case scenario playing in your head. Take 5 minutes today and journal through these questions:
- What specific future event am I actively rehearsing right now? Write down the exact scenario you keep replaying in your mind. Expose it to the light.
- Where am I trying to hoard tomorrow’s grace? Are you trying to solve a problem that isn’t scheduled to arrive until next month? How does bringing your focus back to the next 24 hours change your stress level?
- Am I entertaining the enemy? Have you pulled up a chair for fear? What is one practical boundary you can set today to stop listening to the enemy’s narration of your future?
