#066: Innocence Is Not Perfection 😇
God didn't put the tree there by accident. Without it, obedience is just the only option available.

Last week: anxiety is just faith aimed at the wrong thing. We fixed the aim.
This week: The Tree Question. The one every honest believer has asked and most churches have never answered directly.
Why did God put the tree there? If He knew what would happen, why allow it? And what does the answer mean for every painful thing He has allowed in your life since?
This isn’t a theological exercise. It’s the question underneath every crisis of faith your generation is walking through.
⏳ THE SIGN
The Question Nobody Answers
56% of Gen Z who grew up religious have walked away from faith by their mid-twenties. And the number one reason isn’t science. It isn’t hypocrisy. It’s unanswered suffering.
Why did God allow this? Why didn’t He stop it? If He’s good and He’s powerful, why does the world look like this?
Every one of those questions traces back to one garden and one tree. And the answer hiding in Genesis 2 is the most important thing most believers have never been taught.
The Diagnosis: A generation is leaving faith not because the evidence is weak but because nobody gave them a framework strong enough to hold the weight of their actual experience. This issue is that framework.
📖 THE WORD
Genesis 2 & The Architecture of Choice
“And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it.” — Genesis 2:16-17 (KJV)
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” — Revelation 4:11 (KJV)
Here is the distinction that changes everything:
Adam and Eve were not created perfect. They were created innocent.

Perfection is not a starting point. It is a destination. And you cannot reach it without the journey. Which means the tree was not a trap. It was not a mistake. It was the only mechanism through which genuine obedience — and therefore genuine character — becomes possible.
If there is no opportunity to do wrong, there is no opportunity to do right.
Without the tree, the Garden is a spiritual vacuum where love and obedience are mechanical, not voluntary. And mechanical obedience is not obedience at all. It is just the only available option.
God did not want the only available option. He wanted you.
🌍 THE WITNESS
The Marriage Analogy
Here is the simplest way to understand why God needed the tree.
Imagine a husband asks his wife: “Baby, do you love me?”
She replies: “Oh honey, you know I love men.”
His heart sinks. Not because she said something wrong. But because being loved as a category is not the same as being loved as a person. He didn’t want to be loved because he happened to be male. He wanted to be chosen — specifically, deliberately, freely — by someone who had the full option to choose otherwise.
That longing is not a human invention. It is the image of God inside us revealing something true about God Himself.
God does not want mechanical creation that obeys by default. He wants us to desire to desire Him. Freely. Knowingly. Having full access to the alternative.
Which is why the tree had to be there. Not to trap humanity. To make love possible.
Three things this reframe changes:
1. HOW YOU SEE YOUR OWN FAILURES
If innocence was the starting point, not perfection, then your failures are not evidence that God made a mistake with you. They are evidence that you are in the same position Adam and Eve were in — being given the opportunity to choose. Every moment of temptation is not an attack on your faith. It is an invitation to exercise it.
The goal was never sinlessness from birth. The goal was always chosen righteousness through the process of living.
2. HOW YOU SEE YOUR SUFFERING
The question “why did God allow this?” assumes the goal was a frictionless, painless existence. But Revelation 4:11 reorients the entire frame. Everything was created for His pleasure — and His pleasure is not your comfort. It is your completion.
Which means the painful thing He allowed was not a failure of His protection. It was part of the architecture of your perfection. Not innocence maintained. Character forged.
God is not a cosmic safety net. He is a sovereign Creator building something in you that innocence alone could never produce.
3. HOW YOU SEE YOUR PURPOSE
Most people approach God as if He exists to serve their goals. Pray enough, believe enough, and He delivers. But Revelation 4:11 is unambiguous: everything was created for His pleasure. Not yours.
That is not a diminishment. It is a liberation.
The moment you stop trying to get God to align with your purpose and start aligning with His, the weight of self-determination lifts entirely. You were not created to figure out your life. You were created to glorify the One who already figured it out before you arrived.
Glory. Honor. Power. These are the three responses Revelation 4:11 says He is worthy to receive. And they are the three things your life was designed to produce — not for your benefit, but for His. Which, by design, turns out to be the same thing.
🔥 THE WORK
The Tree Audit
1. The Question Underneath What is the “why did God allow this” question you’ve been carrying? Name it specifically. Now reframe it: what character, what capacity, what depth of faith could only be built through exactly that experience?
2. The Innocence Check Where have you been treating your failures as disqualifications instead of developments? Innocence was the starting point. Perfection is the destination. You are somewhere in between. That’s not failure. That’s the journey.
3. The Purpose Inversion In what area of your life are you still trying to get God to align with your agenda instead of aligning yours with His? Name it. That’s where the friction is coming from.
4. The Glory Question How does your life currently produce glory, honor, and power for God — not just comfort and success for yourself? If you can’t answer that, that’s this week’s prayer.

“Father, we confess we have been asking the wrong question.
We asked why You allowed the tree instead of understanding that the tree was the gift. We demanded a frictionless life instead of trusting a sovereign process. We wanted innocence preserved instead of character forged.
Forgive us. You didn’t put the tree there to trap us. You put it there so our yes would mean something.
We choose You today. Not because You’re the only option. Because You are the right one.
Build in us what innocence alone could never produce.

The tree was not a mistake. It was the mechanism.
Without it, your yes means nothing. Without it, love is just the only available setting. Without it, there is no journey from innocence to perfection — just a static existence that God never intended.
He put it there because He wanted to be chosen. By you. Freely. Knowingly. With full access to the alternative.
The tree was never the problem. It was the point.
