#045: đŸ„ Are You Rushing or Are You Dragging in Your Relationships?

55% of Gen Z say they're not ready for relationships. But readiness isn't the goal—walking in step with God is....

đŸ“± TL;DR

You are waiting for a “readiness” that does not exist. Growth is a partnership, not a prerequisite. Stop waiting for the perfect solo. Start walking in step with the Conductor.

Welcome, Family

In the movie Whiplash, the conductor screams at the drummer: “Are you rushing or are you dragging?” Most young adult relationships are failing for the same reason: They are out of tempo with God.

  • The Rushers: Forcing timelines, manufacturing intimacy, and pushing for “forever” before God has even said “go.”

  • The Draggers: Waiting for “perfect healing,” delaying partnership until they have a “PhD in Self,” and treating marriage like a reward for being perfect.

Both miss the beat. Because the question isn’t your speed. It’s whose rhythm you’re following.

🍞 This Week’s Bread

  • ⏳ The Sign: The Readiness Paradox

  • 📖 The Word: Can Two Walk Together? (Amos 3:3)

  • 🌍 The Witness: Growth Happens in Partnership

  • đŸ”„Â The Work: The Tempo Audit

  • ⚡ Midweek Power: Wednesday Prayer

⏳ THE SIGN

The Readiness Paradox

The data is clear, but the application is broken:

  • 78% of Gen Z want to marry someday.

  • Nearly half claim they aren’t “ready” for a relationship now.

  • 58% view therapy as a prerequisite for even starting to date.

Translation: They want love. But they’re waiting for a readiness that only comes through partnership.

And while they drag, 80% of Gen Z singles believe they’ll find true love, and 86% want a committed romantic relationship.

The Reality: You are stuck in the driveway. You are waiting for a maturity that can only be forged in the fire of relationship.

Growth happens in partnership, not before it. Showing up imperfectly is better than waiting for perfection that doesn’t exist.

The question isn’t “Am I ready?” It’s “Am I in step with God?”

📖 THE WORD

Agreement Over Perfection

This verse kills the “Readiness Myth.” It doesn’t ask if you are both “healed” or “successful” or “ready.” It asks if you are agreed.

  1. Agreement on Direction: Where are we going?

  2. Agreement on Destination: Who is the Lord of this life?

  3. Agreement on Tempo: Are we moving at God’s pace?

Marriage isn’t the reward for being ready. Marriage is the context for becoming ready together. You agree on the path, and then you start walking.

God sets the tempo. Your job isn’t to rush it or drag behind it. Your job is to keep rhythm.

And then you walk in step.

Growth Happens in Partnership

In Hebrew, man is Ish and woman is Isha.

  • Ish contains the letter Yod—a hand or a seed. Man brings ideas, vision, direction.

  • Isha contains the letter Hay—a container that reveals. Woman receives, nurtures, reveals.

Neither is complete alone. A man without a wife is considered incomplete. A woman helps a man fulfill his potential. A husband helps a woman fulfill her purpose.

The Modern Evidence:

Recent studies show that Gen Z is reclaiming early marriage on their own terms, realizing that pressure—like that found during COVID-19—actually accelerates maturity and depth in a way that “solo growth” never can.

Contract vs. Covenant:

  • We are stuck in Contract Mode: Built on mutual distrust.

    • “I’ll commit when you meet my 47 requirements. If you don’t give me what you promised, I’ll take you to court.”
  • God calls us to Covenant Mode: Built on mutual love.

    • “I will give everything to ensure you become who God called you to be.”

The Pandemic Proof:

During COVID, confined circumstances created unique bonding that provided couples opportunity to communicate with depth and maturity.

The pressure forced them to walk in step. And early marriage can mature alongside mutual trust and purposeful dialogue—partners grow together, not separately first.

The Panel Truth:

Our couples panel proved it: The marriages that work aren’t built by two perfectly healed individuals. They’re built by two imperfect people who agreed to walk in step with God—and let Him set the tempo.

That’s maturity. And they didn’t learn it alone—they learned it together.

The Tempo Audit

Be honest with yourself this week. Grab a pen:

  1. The Speed Check: Are you forcing a timeline (Rushing) or hiding behind “self-work” to avoid risk (Dragging)?

  2. The Agreement Test: If you’re dating, are you evaluating them like a job candidate (Contract), or are you agreed on the destination (Covenant)?

  3. The Rhythm Question: Is your pace dictated by your anxiety, or by the Holy Spirit?

🙏 PRAYER CORNER

Every Wednesday at 8:00 PM EST, we gather to get back in step.

Let us pray:

“Father, we confess we’ve been out of step.

Some of us are rushing—forcing timelines, manufacturing readiness. Some of us are dragging—waiting for perfect healing that only comes through partnership.

Teach us to walk in agreement with You. Set the tempo. We’ll keep rhythm.

We surrender the readiness myth. We trust that growth happens in partnership, not before it.

Make us willing to walk in step—imperfectly, obediently, together. Amen.”
