Navigating Christian Relationships in a Swipe-Right City

Dating apps are exhausting. Hookup culture is empty. How Christian young adults can pursue healthy, God-honoring relationships in modern Atlanta.

The Chaos of Modern Dating

Dating in your 20s and 30s has never been more complicated. Atlanta is filled with incredible young professionals, yet everyone seems to agree that the dating scene is deeply broken.

The secular world offers a script based entirely on consumerism: Swipe until you find someone better. Avoid commitment. Keep your options open. Protect yourself at all costs.

Sadly, many Christians have unconsciously adopted this exact same script, merely dressing it up with a few Bible verses.

Redefining the Goal

If the secular goal of dating is self-fulfillment, the Christian goal of dating is discernment.

Dating is not a status to be achieved; it is an evaluation process to determine if two people are called to the covenant of marriage. When you shift your perspective from “Will this person make me happy right now?” to “Is this person running in the same direction toward Christ?”, everything changes.

3 Pillars of Healthy Christian Relationships

1. Character Over Chemistry Chemistry is important, but character sustains a marriage for 50 years. We often overlook massive character red flags because someone is charming, successful, or attractive. Prioritize the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5) over their LinkedIn profile.

2. Guard Your Heart (But Don’t Wall It Off) Proverbs 4:23 tells us to guard our hearts. This means being wise about emotional and physical boundaries. However, many young adults interpret this as building a fortress and refusing to be vulnerable. You must be willing to risk rejection to find connection.

3. Date in Community The most dangerous thing you can do is date in isolation. When you pull away from your friends and church to focus solely on a romantic relationship, you lose perspective. You need brothers and sisters in Christ who know you well enough to say, “Hey, I see this red flag,” or “This person brings out the best in you.”

Community Before Romance

Before you can be a healthy partner, you need to be a healthy individual. And health is cultivated in community.

At Mogaka Events Ministry, we don’t host “Christian Singles Mixers” because forced romantic pressure ruins authentic connection. Instead, we host Bible studies, serve days, and dinners. We believe the best way to find someone running in the same direction is to focus on the race yourself. Join us at the table.

Don't Navigate This Alone

Reading about this is only the first step. The next step is bringing it into the light with a real community.
